SONGWRITING

I struggle to find the words to explain how important music has been in my life, the description that I have settled on for the moment is that my love of music is at my very core. As you can see I’m also a storyteller at heart. These two passions overlap in songwriting, few things feel as fulfilling.
While I have written a party song or two, I really love to dig into deeper feelings in song. My song “Try” is a great example of that. As the guy who wrote a book on being tenacious, it shouldn’t surprise that I wrote a song about my relationship with trying. I love to co-write, and I shared this idea with two amazing ladies, Victoria Shaw, and Madeline Stone. When I came to Victoria with the outline she beamed and exclaimed “I have been wanting to write a song about this!”. Madeline beamed too, but she’s such a light that she is always beaming. Please check out the lyrics and song. This song is absolutely me.

TRY (2020, Try again)

There are times when I feel frozen
In the place where I am standing
’Cause that mountain seems impossible to climb

There are times I hear the words
Saying careful where you step
And I realize that voice inside is mine

But I’m not listening, I’m not listening…
You might be scared as hell
But the only ones who really fail
Are the ones who never try

If you live in fear, it’ll chain you
And you’re never gonna fly

So I try, oh I try

I refuse to let my fear
Hold me down just like a prisoner
I’d rather make mistakes than just standing still

I might fall flat on my face
But tell me, man, who hasn’t
And the way I got back up was by sheer will
I’m not giving in, I’m not giving in….

I might be scared as hell
But the only ones who really fail
Are the ones who never try

If you live in fear, it’ll chain you
And you’re never gonna fly

So I try, oh I try

Solo

Just keep moving forward
When your knees are shaking
Just keep moving forward
When your knees are shaking
Just keep moving forward
When your knees are shaking

You might be scared as hell
But the only ones who really fail
Are the ones who never try

If you live in fear, it will chain you
And you’re never gonna fly

You might be scared as hell
But the only ones who really fail
Are the ones who never try

If you live in fear, it’ll chain you
And you’re never gonna fly

So I try

I refuse to let my fear
Hold me down like a prisoner
